Why Residents at Rush University Medical Center Secure GSI During Training

Physicians training through Rush Graduate Medical Education can secure guaranteed standard issue disability insurance early when deep discounts apply. The hospital-sponsored GSI program at Rush is always subject to closure to new applicants without warning. GSI coverage is available only while a resident or fellow is actively enrolled in a participating GME training program.

After training, GSI is no longer available and individual disability insurance applications require full medical underwriting, a process during which insurers review medical records, prescription history, prior injuries, and other health data before deciding whether to issue a policy with exclusions.

What Medical Underwriting Can Mean for Rush Physicians Later in Training

During the full medical underwriting process, conditions that are common among physicians in training can result in exclusions, premium ratings, or outright declines. Anxiety treatment, ADHD medication, musculoskeletal history from sports or clinical rotations, needle-stick exposure, and pregnancy complications are among the factors that underwriters may note.

Exclusion riders typically remove coverage for any disability related to the flagged condition, meaning a surgeon who later develops a hand injury tied to a prior injury may find that benefit denied. Because Rush GSI disability insurance is issued without reviewing medical history, none of those factors apply to GSI policy holders.

When Rush Residents and Fellows Qualify for GSI

Rush residents and fellows qualify for Guaranteed Standard Issue disability insurance while actively training through Rush Graduate Medical Education. Applications must be submitted during residency or fellowship. Enrollment does not reopen after graduation.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Active residency or fellowship through Rush Graduate Medical Education (GME)
  • Training within an eligible Rush University Medical Center residency program
  • Application submitted before completing residency or fellowship
  • No prior exclusion, rating, or decline from another individual disability carrier within the qualifying lookback period

Consider applying here first because Rush residents who apply with an outside disability insurance carrier before securing the Guardian GSI offer risk losing access to this program entirely. If an outside application results in an exclusion rider, premium rating, or decline, GSI eligibility is forfeited.

Applying elsewhere when a GSI offer exists is never advisable and your application is not a commitment to purchase a GSI policy. Set for Life Insurance is approved to provide GSI disability insurance to eligible residents and fellows at Rush University Medical Center.
