Underwriting Process
How to get broker negotiated discounts and handle medical records requests to avoid exclusions
The Disability Insurance Underwriting Process
Set for Life Insurance guides you through the disability insurance underwriting process from initial quote to policy issue. Our role is to help you secure individual disability insurance coverage that aligns with your occupation class, earned income, medical history, and long-term income protection objectives. We will include discounts if/when they are available,
Here are the next steps in the disability insurance underwriting process:
1. Request Disability Insurance Quote
Submit a quote request and we will prepare a customized disability insurance underwriting comparison within 24 hours.
Your quote analysis evaluates:
- Occupation class underwriting
- Earned income and financial underwriting limits
- Elimination period and benefit period options
- Own-occupation disability insurance eligibility
- Rider availability based on underwriting guidelines
- Discounts if available
This initial underwriting review allows us to identify the carriers most aligned with your occupational risk profile and income structure before a formal application is submitted.
2. Compare Disability Insurance Quotes
Within 24 hours, you will receive a comprehensive disability insurance underwriting comparison outlining the most suitable individual disability insurance policies based on your underwriting criteria.
At this stage, we can revise:
- Monthly benefit amounts
- Residual and partial disability riders
- Future increase options
- Cost-of-living adjustment riders
- Elimination periods
- Benefit periods
This ensures your disability insurance underwriting strategy aligns with both your income replacement needs and carrier underwriting guidelines.
3. Submit Application
Once an application is submitted, formal disability insurance underwriting begins.
This stage may include:
- A detailed health questionnaire (medical underwriting review)
- Financial underwriting through income documentation (tax returns, W-2s, K-1s, or profit-and-loss statements)
- A paramedical exam (typically required when applying for more than $10,000 per month in disability insurance benefits)
- Prescription database review
- Attending Physician Statements (APS), if medical clarification is required
Disability insurance underwriting evaluates occupation class, income stability, medical history, and existing disability coverage to determine:
- Approval status
- Premium rate classification
- Available benefit amounts
- Policy exclusions or modifications
- Rider eligibility
- Issue and participation limits
Most disability insurance underwriting reviews are completed within 3–6 weeks, depending on medical complexity and documentation requirements.
Our role during underwriting is to communicate directly with carrier underwriters, clarify risk factors, submit supplemental documentation when necessary, and advocate for the strongest possible individual disability insurance offer.
If you qualify for a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance program, medical underwriting is waived and coverage is typically issued within 3–5 business days under predefined underwriting guidelines.
4. Review Offers and Put Policy in Force
After disability insurance underwriting is complete, the carrier will issue a formal offer.
You may:
- Accept the policy as offered
- Modify benefit amounts or riders
- Decline the offer
Once accepted, the disability insurance policy is placed in force. Most individual disability insurance policies include a 30-day free-look period, allowing you to review policy provisions, underwriting exclusions, and benefit structure without obligation.
5. Ongoing Disability Insurance Policy Assessment
Once coverage is active, you are protected under a guaranteed renewable disability insurance contract.
Disability insurance underwriting applies at issue; future health changes do not alter approved policy terms.
As your income grows or your occupational responsibilities change, we will review your individual disability insurance coverage to:
- Evaluate future increase options
- Adjust benefit amounts within underwriting limits
- Ensure continued alignment with income replacement objectives
