Reason #18 for Disability Insurance: Trips to the Emergency Room Rise in the Summer

Many people are fully aware that emergency room visits increase in the summertime. Before you go outside to play, make sure your income is properly protected with an individual disability insurance policy! If you already have disability insurance or a group disability insurance policy, make sure you have reviewed your coverage and that you are properly protected.

A quality individual disability insurance with an own occupation definition of disability will pay you benefits if you are too sick or injured to work. That includes many of the accidents that occur during the summer.  Last summer, here at Set for Life Insurance, we had several clients file claims related to accidents. We had an anesthesiologist who was in a terrible car accident and broke her neck. She was out of work for a considerable amount of time. Fortunately, she reviewed and adjusted her policy throughout her career and had adequate coverage before her accident.

Here are some interesting statistics about emergency room visits.

1 in 5

The ratio of American adults who visited the ER at least once in 2011, the new CDC report said. Seven percent of those adults who went to the ER found themselves there more than once.

The percentage of patients who waited between 15 and 59 minutes to see an ER doctor or nurse practitioner in 2010. Twenty-five percent waited less than 15 minutes.

The percentage of ER patients who were treated and released in 2009-10. Doctors admitted 16 percent to the hospital, and 2 percent left the ER before being treated. Less than 1 percent of ER visits end in a patient’s death.

The percentage of ER patients in 2010 under age 15 who were boys. Forty-three percent between ages 15 to 64 were men.

The percentage of all U.S. health care spending in 2010 that came from hospital costs, including ER visits. The scientific journal Plos One revealed that an American visiting the ER for one of the 10 most common reasons had a median bill of $1,233.
