The Only Reason to Buy Disability Insurance

This week I had a call from a long time client of mine. He initially purchased his disability insurance policy back in 1999 when he was finishing up his medical residency in general surgery. Over the years we kept in touch and increased his policy as his income increased. When he had children, he purchased life insurance.

When he called me this week, he sounded really upset. He was recently diagnosed with a condition that caused blindness in one of his eyes. He could no longer perform surgery at the age of 45. He is the sole breadwinner in his house and has two elementary aged children. Fortunately, he has enough disability insurance to carry his family and their financial obligations. Without a disability insurance policy, his family would be in a world of hurt.

THERE IS ONLY ONE REASON TO PURCHASE A DISABILITY POLICY: YOU MAY NEED IT. Statistics aside, if you are the person who can’t work and are dependent on your income, you MUST protect that income properly! For this client, the disability insurance policy will allow his family to maintain their lifestyle without additional stress.

Some clients ask me “what happens if I pay premiums all these years and never use my disability insurance?” My answer to them is “great! You never had to endure a sickness or injury and you had the peace of mind that your income was protected over these years!”
