At Set for Life Insurance, we are proud to be involved with the promotion of Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) DIAM is sponsored by the LIFE Foundation (Life Insurance Foundation for Education), a non-profit concern dedicated to creating awareness and promotion of the insurance industry.

This year’s theme is “paycheck protection.” When people think of disabilities, they typically think about catastrophic injuries that paralyze them. They typically don’t think about smaller injuries or illnesses that can cause them to lose their paycheck.

Most Americans do not have a back up plan if they lose their job to an economic downturn. They do not have enough money saved. But what about if they couldn’t work due to a sickness or injury? The same risk is there even during times of economic security. Therefore, by using the theme “paycheck protection,” it drives home the importance of protecting their incomes and financial security.

To help promote Disability Insurance Awareness Month, Set for Life has been featured in multiple industry publications, including Agent’s Sales Journal www.asjonline.com.

Why devote a whole month promoting disability insurance? Most people are already aware of the various mainstream insurance available such as auto, health and life insurance. Most people are not aware of the risk they have if they become too sick or injured to work. Therefore, it is critical to create consumer awareness of the importance of protecting incomes.

Many people are aware of the devastation that takes place when jobs are lost due to economic hardship. During the great recession when unemployment has peaked, we have also seen a significant rise in the number of home foreclosures. Prior to the recession, 48% of all home foreclosures were due to people being disabled.

Even if you are working in a secure job or industry, you, too, are still at risk of losing it all if you become too sick or injured to work. How would you continue to pay your mortgage and other financial obligations? Is your paycheck protected?
