Clients often ask me if they should purchase the same disability policy as their spouse.

The answer is no. Disability insurance should be looked at individually.  Furthermore, there are no available discounts if both spouses purchase coverage from the same company. It is best to each purchase the best policy for each individual.

Rates are dependent on various factors which may vary between spouses:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Income
  • Occupation, including medical specialty
  • Health issues
  • Group disability insurance benefits currently in force.

Any of these variables could make a difference as to which policy and type of coverage is most suitable.

The best way to find the most suitable policy is to compare plans for each individual spouse before making a decision.
