Disability Insurance for Graduating Medical Students: Time Running Out

If you are a graduating medical student, class of 2013, time may be running out to take advantage of the opportunity to purchase your individual disability insurance policy in the most optimal conditions.

Graduating medical students my purchase up to $2500/month benefit regardless of income or medical school. Some companies allow students to purchase a policy for as little as $1000/month benefit with the ability to increase it up to $15,000/month without further medical underwriting.

Why should medical students purchase their policy before residency?

If you are considering a surgical specialty and wait until you are a resident physician to purchase your disability policy, your rates will be approximately 20% more than if you purchase your policy as a medical student. Medical students may purchase their policy at non-surgical rates.

If you are currently attending a hospital with available discounted rates, this can save you significantly. Especially if you are a woman and can obtain a unisex discounted policy. Make sure the discount is permanent and will apply to future increases.
